Police maintain the bike was taken by "unknown persons", but reports have emerged it was actually taken by two friends who were following the victim.
The 37-year-old later died after being rushed to Joondalup Health Campus with multiple injuries.
Inspector Trevor Davis said the rider crashed his bike at the intersection of Hester Avenue and Renshaw Boulevard about 3.10pm, after he hit a traffic island in the middle of the road.
Before police arrived at the scene, Inspector Davis said "unknown persons" put the motorbike in a ute and drove off.
Major Crash Investigations did not give any further details.
However Channel 10 understands two friends were following the man on his Harley Davidson soft-tail and they took the bike after he crashed. They did not know how serious the man's injuries were at the time.
A caller on Radio 6PR said he saw a black Harley-Davidson that was a "bit banged up" leaning against the fence of a Balcatta oval after he left work about half-an-hour ago.
Police have called for any witnesses to yesterday's crash to contact Crime Stoppers.

Thanks Dazza for the lastest update on this I have place the extra details on the main article.......Looks like there is more too this story as it unfolds but nevertheless if it was friends that took the bike who needs enemies. You would of thought the bike would of been the last thing on their minds with your friend laying injured on the road. You are right Roka Rida this is suddenly sounding a bit suss.
The media these days can't help themselves but to punch out a story before anyone else, then start to elaborate and change it as more info comes to light.....It's very difficult to come to a conclusion about an incident without all the facts...
