The Finks Motorcycle Club has been declared an illegal organisation in South Australia.

The Attorney-General, Michael Atkinson, has enacted the ban in Parliament under the Government's Serious and Organised Crime legislation.

Under the legislation almost 50 members or ex-members of the Finks have been put under control orders.

It will now be up to the Police Commissioner to apply for orders to make it illegal for Finks members to associate with one another.

Mr Atkinson says he carefully weighed up police evidence before deciding on the ban.

"The Finks are an organisation that projects such fear in sections of society that they are able to make a mockery of our criminal justice system," he said.

Civil libertarians have condemned the legislation and motorcycle clubs have threatened to challenge it through the courts.
