Installing Vance & Hines exhaust with Fuelpak

When I bought my Dyna Fatbob, I knew I'd be changing the exhaust to something better looking (and sounding). So after a couple of weeks, a set of Vance & Hines Short Shots were ordered, and installed.

I only ran it for half a minute, and I was undoing all the bolts to reinstall the factory pipes.... then off to Morgan & Wacker to order some "quiet" baffles.  It was TOO LOUD!   Another couple of weeks, and the baffles arrive, so I put the V&H back on.

It still sounded like the God of Thunder had arrived, but not too bad... When I leave for work at 5.30am, I roll down the road about 200 metres before I press the "Thunder" button.  But I had the backfire -snap, crackle and pop on decelleration.

Back to the computer, I ordered the Fuelpak.  It's what V&H recommended to use with their pipes... so....?

After a week and a half, it arrived Friday.  So, Friday afternoon, poor ole Fatbob is being dismantled (why is that seat strap such a shit!), found I didn't have the right torx bit to remove the electrical box, so it was  a quick dash up to Bunnings  to buy a bigger set .  In the meantime, I forgot about a bloke turning up to look at a bike I pranged 3 years ago, that I finally put on Ebay!  Sorry to him for being late... but I had a new part to install!

The Fuelpak is installed between the existing ECU plug and the ECU (Most of you probably know that), so you have to re-route the big plug from the ECU back under the seat, and feed the Fuelpack plug back where the old one came from into the ECU, then plug the other Fuelpak plug into the original ECU plug.  The instructions say to relocate the alarm module to the backbone, to fit the piggybacked plugs ....???

When i tried putting it all back together, it seems the ECU was in the way of the plugs.  I tried a few heaves and pushes before giving in... I had to take the family out to a monster truck event...

when I got home, I did some late night surfing, and found some bloke in Kentucky had a different approach.... so up yesterday morning, moved the ECU plugs in front of the backbone, and the elecrics box can be bolted back in!  I programmed in the appropriate numbers supplied by Fuelpak, put the seat and side cover back on (bloody seat strap!) washed my hands.... "Why haven't you been helping me get the kids ready to go out????" Fuq! (The kids had tickets to a magic show at Southbank at midday)

End of a long story, I got to go for a ride this arvo with a mate for a few hours... and the Fatbob is better behaved... not so aggressive sounding on idle. There is still some crackle and pop on decelleration, but Fuelpak say all their maps are worked out with a high-flow air filter, which I haven't got.  I got a Msg from Jordan, telling me to upgrade the air filter(amongst other things) so I'll be looking for a new air filter, maybe even one to fit into the original housing.   Ideas, anyone?

Sorry for the long and boring post, but there didn't seem to be much on the Fuelpak here.

Oh, and I sold my wreck (Honda VF750C Magna, with twisted forks, bent frame, etc for over 1900... I've over the moon

The K&N Filters website hasn't been working for me, and the look of the DRAK didn't appeal to me. Today I ended up putting in the Screaming Eagle Stage 1 kit. The kit replaces the baseplate of the factory filter, doing away with the active intake flapper. It has a filter with a bigger intake area, and uses the original cover. The baseplate is smaller than original one, which means the air can be drawn from all around the base of the cover.

Taking it for a test run, most of the decel pop has gone, but the bike feels better to ride. I'll see how it goes over the next few weeks with a few highway runs.

I think I'm going to have to raid the tax refund, and go to the TTS system. when I start the bike up and get going, I get a few misfires till she gets warm. After that, it's minor decel pops, which I'm not overly concerned about... but I'll get my harley going popless!
