As mentioned in the Balingup run thread my bike had been getting hard to start the few days before the run and culminated in what I believe is a snapped jackshaft and hopefully not much else.
My bikes has a 103 with SE flatops and a 30 thou Cometic gasket along with an Andrews 54H cam. Many sources have stated that HD's claimed comp figures are always high and that the comp on this should be about 9.7:1 not over 10:1 that HD would have you believe. Either way it has always been slow to start and I should of installed compression releases when I did it initially.
Seeing as I have to open it up again and take the heads off as well as replace the starter what should I do?
I didn't touch the heads the first time around so should I have these ported while they are off? If so by who?
The new SE MVA heads look interesting but would require different pistons. If I am going to change pistons should I go larger than 103 and bore my old jugs?
Somewhere around this point the crank becomes a liability and if that has to come out do I go larger again there too?
Or do I just fix the starter and trade it in on one of them new VMAX yammies *ducks*
cheers Surly
Sorry to read about ya troubles Surly, but really you should just bit the bullet and put a 131 in it, only the odd lazy 15 grand......................................
Your new EGS will have about the same cold cranking comp as mine does PIB. Do they put releases in that?
FYO who was the guy you mentioned? I am assuming he is in the US?
It has had a TMAX and now the TTS and has already killed a battery.
I tried replacing the first battery with an oddyssey and that struggled even more so back to stock HD.
The TTS definitely starts better than the tmax did,
It has blown the sprag bearing.
Finally have the bike back together with the 1.4kw high output HD starter.
No releases done at this stage as if I pull the heads for release it will be part of a bigger project
I haven't had a chance for a hot start but bike starts faster and easier than it ever did before with none of the protesting or wheezing like a terminal TB patient it had before.
While the horseshoe oil tank might look cool it is a pain in the arse to get in and out. Score one point for the dyna!
Hiya Surly,
Good to see ya got the bike back in action....That took a while!!
I'm gonna retire the tmax...got a TTS coming....That should be interesting

$640 from M&M
No one in Australia I called had one to give me anyway so off to the US it was.
My overrun clutch shit it's self cost me $202 from HD aus, next time the bigger starter is going in or I will get it from the US of A. But fuck me what a poor life span for a HD ( Jap) product it has only done 44k klms, same thing for a starter in a Kenny or Mack cost the same and they do about 200k + klms.
Thanks be to god that I have got a service manual, I could only imagine how much labour the STEALER'S would charge, probably would have to mortgage the house.
