POLICE are exploring bikie gang links as they investigate a savage, unprovoked attack on a US marine taking shore leave in Sydney.

Brian Lee, 25, was on his way home from a six-month tour of Iraq in October last year when his ship, the USS Peleliu, stopped in Sydney.

Having visited nightclubs with colleagues in the Kings Cross area, the California-based Marine was drunk when he was attacked as he crossed Roslyn St about 2am (AEST) on October 13.

NSW Police have launched a new appeal to find his assailants, who bashed him so severely he suffered short-term amnesia and is yet to return to active service.

"The attack was unprovoked, the Marine was simply walking along the street, happened to walk into the path of a vehicle,'' Superintendent Tony Crandell said.

"The occupants of that vehicle alighted and he was struck to the side of the head with a single blow causing serious and significant injuries.''

The men stepped out of a silver 2000-model Mitsubishi Magna, before one of them punched Mr Lee in the cheek, causing him to fall and hit his head on the roadway.

The men fled and Mr Lee was rushed to hospital in a critical condition, where he underwent emergency surgery and then spent nine days in a coma.

"When he came out of that coma, he also suffered amnesia, in that he was unable to recognise his child or his wife, who were brought over here to be by his side due to the gravity of his injuries,'' Supt Crandell said.

Several witness statements have failed to lead police to an arrest.

Today, investigators released images of the wanted men, who Supt Crandell said may have links to outlaw motorcycle gangs.

"We have not ruled out that there is OMCG links to the people that we're seeking, but those links are yet to be determined by investigators,'' he said.

Mr Lee's attackers are described as being of Middle Eastern/Mediterranean appearance, aged in their mid-20s, with muscular builds.

The man who allegedly punched Mr Lee had short dark hair and a well-maintained beard, and at the time wore a t-shirt, shorts and runners
