Noise in Primary

I have recently noticed a noise in the motor, well it seems to be coming more from the primary drive area.   I had a listen this afternoon and it is more of a metal on metal sound. slapping like but not constatnt like a tappet noise or a knock. It is more pronounced when the motor has warmed up.  When I got home this afternoon I listened and it is deffinately from that side of the motor. Although depending on where you listed it coule either be from the front or back. Sound reflections. I stopped the engine and left it for a minute then started it and the noise was not as noticable.  I notice it more at idle than anything, but it may be there all the time when riding but due to wind, pipe noise etc it is hard to hear.  I have done the stethescope with the screw driver and can't hear anything major that would indicate something loose. I have had a look through the forums and can't find anything that resembles what I have.  I have sent a PM to Scotty asking advise and am waiting a response from him.

    Bike is 07 Softail.

AC/Pipes/ tuned. etc. I have clocked up a bit of ks on it, around 25,000.  I don't thrash it.  Warm it up before riding, all the things I was taught when I first started riding.  I am running ATF/F in the primary and that was changed 4k ago.  When I changed the oil there was not that much fuzz ion the magnet, althought he oil was black as with quite a bit of sludge.  I intend to change it again for the next service.

The bike is still under warranty, so I want to have an idea if I take it back to get looked at.  (That is normal Harley sounds does not wash with me).  That I expect the spanner to tell me when I turn up.

So you ppl with a lot more kowledge than me can you advise on possibilites. Clutch?, Primary Chain?, Compensator bolt come loose?, Auto chain adjuster worn?.  Buggered if I know and I am not that keen to drop the case as it is under warranty.

    Regards

pretty sure there was an issue with bearings only lasting a short time in the primary, they were being replaced under warranty at the dealers, mates 06 Dyna had his go at 15k................real bad sound........dealer should be able to advise if your bike is still under warranty.............

I dropped into Pro Street Cycles this afternoon to pick up the gasket and they had a listen to what I was worried about. The Mech said it was the chain, even though they have an auto adjustment on them they still need a bit of a nudge at times. He suggested that I try putting a fine screw driver inside the Derby cover to push the bottom ramp to tighten the chain a bitas the chain slaps against the top when letting off the throttle. If that failed drop the case and check everything out then. They gave me the gasket for nicks and I bought some Bell Ray oil. There is just not enough room to get to the adjuster. with a screw driver although I must admit I not quite sure where it was in relation to the clutch etc. I checked the tension on the chain and yep it was just touching the outer case at the top when everything heated up. pushed the adjuster up 2 clicks, put everything back together and went for a ride, got the bike nice and warmed up and no noise. I will keep an eye on things over the next couple of days and if it return then back to the dealer under warranty.
