Found this site about how to change your oil.
Its got some handy tips........but............
http://www.dudeworld.com.au/HOWTO.ENGINE.HTML
There is an interesting paragraph which states the following........
Normal oil change: I use the best synthetic oil I can lay my hands on and dump it every 4000kms (2500 miles) religiously. After many, many hours scouring the net for info I believe the best synthetic oil for your Harley is either Amsoil or Mobil 1. The only laboratory measured difference between Mobil 1 V-Twin blend and the cheaper Mobil 1 car oil is that the car oil has a slightly higher molybdenum content than the bike oil and the bike oil has a higher price tag. There are no wet clutches inside a Harley motor, so if anything the higher molybdenum content in the Mobil 1 car oil is going to be the better (and cheaper) choice of the two
Anyone got the good oil on this statement??
i Hate to have to reply to this but i can't help myself READ the threads that have been listed and at 4,000ks dumping your syn oil boy you need advice it is not even working at that ks try 10,000ks and it will still be like new .unless you have a lot of money then do it by all means.
not interested in when to change. I was more interested in the bit about Mobil 1 V Twin versus the Mobil 1 car oil
Robcig hit the nail on the head, stick with the v-twin and fit an oil COOLER if you live in Darwin ,your bike will love you.I live in the NT also and change my V-twin every 10,000ks.
Magilla Hi Ratz here,
I have been watchin this oil debate for many years now and have thouhgt that HD oils are good but Syn oils ie; Mobil 1 V Twin is also good and will run smooth and cool, so i have used it. I also decided to put this to a little forum test at a small gathering in the states at an Ams Oil tent in Sturgis where i thought if i cant get a straight answer here on oil it wouldnt exist, so i picked first on a tent full of sporty race crew nuts who raced nearly every wknd and asked them wot oil?? They were very keen to use Ams oil first but also had hi regard for Mobil 1 V Twin which for $$$ sake is made in the US of A and therefore alot cheaper, next i went to the Ams Oil tent and asked wot if i cant get this stuff in OZ to which they all mumbled Mobil 1 V Twin, I slept well that nite with the help of Jack. I have rang Mobil for larger bottles of the above, NO, so phuck u Mobil
I am however not going to use Mobil 1 V Twin ever again as i have just found a late model 5.7 C/dore ute and am using Mobil 1 FOR CARS in that the Fatboy and the Sporty with many dollars saved. These three toys have all been tricked up and are driven/ridden like they are stolen, which has another link, how do you ride your scooter and wot is your climate?? This oil is as good if not great ($$$ saved per 5 ltr,s) and slightly better because it has all the ticks and is also Porsche approved. This will do me as i believe HD are in bed with Porsche the V Rods, I rest my case
Cheers the Rat
Tite pussy loose shoes and a warm place to crap
Hey Ratz, the saying goes "tight pussy, new shoes and a warm place to shit", then again...I thought I was wrong once but was mistaken.
Thanku shfunky i stand corrected but i like loose shoes betr as new shus are generally tight, however any views on oils and stuff,?? and does "liqui Moly Engine Detox" really work???? Shiny side up!!
My old girl is 23 years old. It has had a few different types in her days from Mineral to Synthetic now. Its still alive with regular changes and new filter( yes a few different kinds). I would hope you could just pick one and stick the sucker in the hole and get out ridin....... just change it regular as said below and I am sure your bike will be thankful........... Smile be happy and it will all be alright!
No worries ratz, I have read a lot of threads on oil, some subjective, some objective, I decided to go with Mobil V-Twin, it will work out about $40 an oil change, will be doing it every 5000k's, on a $26,000 bike it doesnt seem expensive to keep the life blood of my girl in good shape. Will be doing the primary and gearbox every 10,000k's, havnt decided with what yet. Just had the 16,000k service done (the last service by Harley, Im doing them from now on) and they changed all three. Warranty's up in 5 months.
I bought a box of 6 litres for $90 from the Mobil distributor in Bombaderry south coast nsw. ($15 a litre)
has anyone used the spectro 6 speed platnium synthetic transmision oil or the heavy duty primary chaincase oil in there bike....the 6 speed platinum synthetic gear oil is best i have used in my harley 6 speed cruise drive transmission...not cheep but nether was my bike...i dont care about the price of anything for my harley as long as it is a good quality product....
What is the SAE of these oils? Seeing as how i have just moved from Cairns to Tamworth the oil that i will use next service will be different because of the temp here. I used straight 50 in Cairns due to the hot weather, what does everyone in NSW use?
bozhog,
Rollies Speed Shop in QLD has the Spectro, Aust distributor....bloody dear stuff though......was going to get a case but at $30 a litre I'll use somthing else.
Personaly I think the 6 spped Transmission bit on the bottle is a sales pitch.
If I can get Mobil1 75W90 or 80W140 is a smaller container than 20 liter drum I'll go the Mobil1...as long as its GL5 you will be right.
Standard price for Mobil1 v-twin is 15 a liter. Buy from a distributer by the case and you will save $$$
hi , i use penrite good ole aussie brand , the 20/50 i think is a bit soft for our temps + a lot of these harleys a classed as a boulavarde cruiser they don't hold enough vol of oil 2 2/3 rds ltrs in an air cooled in line twin cly motor,
i use penrite enduro its made for older style american/european bigger cap bikes meaning air cooled types ,
i use a good quality oil filter theres a lot of shit cheap filters out there & change the oil in the oil tank about 2 1/2 no more than 3,000 klms ,do the filter every 2nd time the oil is well $ enough to change reg about $5 ltr , buy changing the oil in the tank your replenish
3/4 of your oil system + keeping the oil clean as it keeps inside the motor clean, the oil has a certain amount of cleaning solvents wich adsorb the engine buy products & thats what dirties the oil , so its best not to have the motor running in black oil esp if its a hard used motor or high temps or both,
the pri oil works pretty hard i don't let the pri or g/box go over 4,000, harley says is 8,000 for oil change ? way too long but they do have to justifiy the $20 a ltr bit value for money.
we used torco for a while in the race bike back then it was $$$ per ltr & then we used penrite there was no differance in the wear factor each season so i went back to penrite & just change it more reg , i am not sure is harley oil made by kendall ?, harley don't make oils, they make motorbikes , hey soul oils ain't ? cheers
