Golden rule #10...... as ingrained to us by our fealess, intrepid Leaners Permit Instructor : Always look before turning or passing etc. Gee, and we thought they were there to just give us a hard time. I bet everyone else on that particular ride looked over their shoulder for the rest of THAT ride. ...Ouch...and expensive.

Interesting that the guy speeding seems to only use the back brake (thats what it looks like to me anyway) otherwise I reckon he could have wiped off a heap of speed with the front brake and got around him pretty easily. It didn't look as if he even tried to react other than to panic and hit the wrong brake. They both made bad decisions but, normally the traffic would be travelling at a decent speed so if you were passing on the outside you wouldn't expect some knob to pull accross the road in front of you without looking, but he should have expected just about anything to happen with that many bikes travelling so slow.

Hi Chips...times certainly have changed. When I got my first licence (car) I took the copper for a ride to pick up his dry cleaning & we talked footy the entire time. Got Lic OK. Another time (after my Lic had expired) I was pulled over between Broken Hill & Cockburn. It cost me a slab to gett license back (car & bike). I wont tell you how long ago that was.

Fast forward to recent times. In Vic, all m/c testing, Learners & License, are contracted out to companies that do it on their behalf. After certain Instructors were handing out Licenses to 1%'s without any tests taking place, (they got caught), the resulting tests are very strict with automatic fail on several issues. Very tough, but fair. Gives newby riders (I was an oldie making a comeback) an excellent start. So there you are.
