TWO Gold Coast bikies charged with cutting off a man's ears over a $50,000 drug debt have changed their pleas and confessed to the brutal attack.
Lone Wolf bikie gang members Aaron Drew Scheers and Benjamin James Denhen had pleaded not guilty to charges including kidnapping, torture and causing grievous bodily harm with intent to maim. A two-week trial was set to begin in Southport District Court today into allegations an accused drug dealer was kidnapped from his home in November 2007 and taken into the Currumbin Valley where his ears were sliced off with box-cutters and he was bashed with a pool cue. The Courier-Mail reports that as late as last Thursday, lawyers for Scheers, 25, and Denhen, 32, were pushing for the case to be adjourned over concerns they would not get a fair trial because of media coverage of the bloody NSW bikie war. The adjournment was refused by trial judge Clive Wall, QC, but at the request of the defence lawyers, he agreed to interrogate potential jurors over their attitude to bikies. But in a surprise development moments before the jury was to be selected, first Denhen and then Scheers - the alleged ear-cutter - decided to plead guilty. Charges against Denhen of torture and causing grievous bodily harm with intent to maim were dropped in return for him pleading guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm while armed and in company. Scheers pleaded guilty to the same offence as well as kidnapping and causing grievous bodily harm with intent to maim after the Crown agreed to drop a charge of torture. Scheers and Denhen were remanded in custody for sentencing next week
