THE NSW Greens want debate on proposed anti-bikie laws delayed to give MPs a chance to consult and consider the legislation.

The NSW Government has introduced legislation into state parliament that would allow members of gangs declared "criminal organisations'' by a Supreme Court judge to be charged immediately and without notice.

They could be jailed for at least two years and would not receive any warnings before being charged.

The laws are designed to crack down on escalating bikie gang violence in Sydney.

The laws went before a special caucus meeting this morning and are expected to be pushed through parliament during the day, with parliament not due to sit again until May.

Greens MP Lee Rhiannon said it would be irresponsible to push the legislation through in one day.

"Good laws are made with proper time for consultation and research to ensure the consequences are positive,'' she said.

"The challenge here is to get the balance right between protecting the public and not undermining civil rights.

"That cannot be achieved in one day of parliamentary debate.''

She wants the debate delayed until May.

On Monday, Premier Nathan Rees conceded the laws may not go before parliament until June, saying he did not want to rush them and have them subjected to a High Court challenge.

Opposition Leader Barry O'Farrell said the coalition would support the laws through both houses of parliament.

Sounds the legislation is a bit tougher than in SA, ie 2 years immediate jail for association. Without the 6 meetings with here. Just on the ABC midday news.
