Call for tough gang laws in NSW

New South Wales should follow South Australia's example and introduce tough legislation to dismantle criminal bikie gangs, says NSW Opposition Leader Barry O'Farrell.

The call comes as a man was bludgeoned to death in a daylight attack at Sydney Airport's Qantas terminal yesterday afternoon, involving 15 men from rival bikie gangs which was witnessed by up to 50 horrified passengers.

NSW Opposition Leader Barry O'Farrell says the horrific episode in Sydney must finally force Premier Nathan Rees to stop standing by and doing nothing, as criminal bikie gang members murder each other in broad daylight in public and putting the wider community at risk

Mr O'Farrell says society needs to completely break up bikie gangs and police must have the powers and resources needed to end their 'reign of terror'.

SA's Serious and Organised Crime Control Act was designed to dismantle criminal bikie gangs by declaring membership or association with outlawed clubs, illegal.

The act also includes new charges, which carry up to 10 years jail for bikie club members and their associates who engage in group violence.

Yesterday's attack happened the same day a drive-by shooting in Sydney's west sent two men to hospital with police investigating if warfare between outlaw motorcycle gangs is to blame.

the violence done on the weekend was done without patches worn ..so how can it classed as club business ..isnt it just a bunch of blokes flogging each other ..what difference is it to a fight at a niteclub ???? ..but they happen to belong to an OMC .. so must be club business, so say the big blue gang

I wonder if the American Motorcycle Club and Ulysses club will be grouped under this???? ..what if so called OMC members start joining these clubs ..do these clubs get banned then?

Will they stop calling themselves a 1% club to get around this ..if they no longer call themselves an outlaw motorcycle club or a 1% club then they shouldnt be targeted

but if they do that then all motorcycle clubs will be the next to be targeted

who declares what club is outlaw???

do what white collar crims do ..rebadge and start up again ... gets around current laws ...

lots of questions and answers to be had now ...

    rkc,

I thought a 1% outlaw club operated outside the law, so what would any new law do ?

We knew it was coming, it was just a matter of when. I for one am not suprised at all, my only issue with this lot is that the powers that be will bring in this new legislation without having done the proper research into why this type violence is happening. So instead of getting to the root of the problem and trying to fix it they are sticking band aids all over it which is not going to fix the underlying problem. The result is a short term fix which any fool knows is not a long term solution.

The problem with these incoming laws in nsw (lets not kid ourselves, it will happen) is where do they stop, once a few laws are passed
how many more will follow to restrict us from enjoying the things we do......

We need to unite and fight for our basic rights and freedoms.........

    -or maybe-

It looks like its time to start my own state with my own laws.........

    The Tbolt State...

Give them half a chance and they will bring them in.......

And lately in nsw they have been given a few reasons to do so.......

The pollies will run with it for all its worth and put fear in people until changes are made.........

    Fatboy,

I would have thought that was a good thing telling the public that these guy's are NOT bike riders or a MC club ?

maybe if the 1% clubs are full of such good ordinary people (but they dont like to be grouped with the other 99% of good ordinary people ) , then maybe they should stop recruiting these dickheads and kick them out before they get they stitched up . then there is noone to tarnish their squeaky clean names
