Thunderslide

Purchased a thunderslide for my 1994 1200 xlh from HD screamin eagle along with the new aircleaner.

Yup i got talked outa the mikuni, sigh

Anyhow was installed by my local dealer, and yes it made a huge dif apart from the fact that at around 2k to 2500 rpm its like i hit a flat spot, this is only when i actually hold it at 2k at  60kmh and at 80 kmh at 2500 rpm.

If i rev from below straight thru or from above those revs all is fine, so i guess i could ride like im at a race meet all the time and it would be fine, but dont really want the cops on my arse.

Main jet installed was the DJ170 and im assuming the original slow jet remained. This thunderslide came in screaming eagle packaging and with the instructions says to install that particular main jet, however from the dynojet site they say use the 180,dynojet site also say not to screw out the mixture screw more than 3 full turns and if you need to then you should change the slow jet to a 46.

Screaming eagle say not to touch the mixture screw at all and not change the slow jet.

Yeah im confused to, however it would seem to me that the problem im having at 2k to 2500 rpm is the change from the slow to main jet, ie flat spot and occasional backfire and that the solution is a bigger slow jet ?

Any help is appreciated in advance

Thnx for the advice, set the needle up 2 spots from the 4th it was on, have 1 space left.

Seems to be a vast improvement, no flat spot that i can detect and all the previous problems gone, the bike did cough once on take off on my last ride but only the once.

Have a little less movement in throttle but its of no concern.

The mixture screw  was out 3 and a half turns, have gone back to 2 full turns out.

The pipes have been changed as well, i notice i didnt mention that in my previous post, one other thing i dont understand is why would the mechanic take out my old jet (which was a 170 as standard) and replace it with another from the kit, and yeah i realize the old may have been worn, but im sure it was done as a matter of course.

My only concern now is the mixture as to whether it's too lean or too rich, but will check the plugs after a longer ride.

    Thnx again

Any mechanic will always go up 1 jet size as a matter of course as this is how they are trained.........................some engines will improve bny going up 1 jet size in the main..............some need 2 jet sizes some need 1..........................all will work once needle hieght is adjusted on a CV carb.......................

My point here is that the old jet was a 170, he put in the 170 from the kit.

And the throttle movement, hmm well maybe my imagination, but certainly seems slightly less, as to why ? i have nfi :)
Will do that plug check later when i have a little more time, day has run out for me :(
Other than that you have my undying gratitude for your helpful comments, the bike not running right really was annoying me :)
