OK, after much research and deliberation, I am convinced Mobil 1 is the best synthetic oil to use in my baby!! I saw it advertised for $25.00 a bottle. I think it was a litre bottle, could have been a quart. Now my question is.. Why is it so damn expensive? Answer, because they can! Can anyone in Sydney recommend a Mobil 1 V Twin outlet that would be happy to sell me a couple of 4 litre containers preferably at a better rate than $25 a litre?

Screaming Eagle Syn is about $17. I'd be happy to pay $20 considering it is by far better!

Hilly 13 at your next service go buy a bottle of TYPE F ATM 1 litre and put it in your primary and the 70-90 syn in your gearbox and give it a try and you will know why.Have been useing it for years no more clunk and the gear change is nice and smooth.I use Mobil 70-90 and Redline high temp ATF it is a bit exy but good oil. There are other brands out there you can try.Charlie

1 litre of Auto Trans Fluid? Any brand or just grade/type F? I think the service manual says .77 litre or 26oz. Overfilling it could cause problems. Others have also said you can use up to 1 litre.

Hi Hilly as ozrodder said give it a go if you don't like it you can allways go back but i think you will, just throw the whole litre in oil that is ha,see if you can buy the Redline ATF High Temp  as it is a lot better,or Valvoline type Fas for the correct amount i think you will find all the stealers just put the whole bottle in it will not hurt with the bit extra cheers from Darwin Charlie

I still use the HD mineral oils and change all 3 (plus the filter) at every 4000km.

Update...Finally got around to doing my 16,000k service. I thoroughly enjoyed getting my hands dirty, and it was NOT as difficult as I thought, thanks to this forum. Firstly, the Mobil 1 is sweet. Only went for a short ride, but is a little quieter. Secondly, I dropped the Screaming Eagle Synthetic out of the primary, and put in the HD primary lubricant... WOW, it shifts beautifully. Surprisingly smooth in every gear. So my theory that the Harley Synthetic oil is perhaps a little too slippery for the primary is correct. I did'nt change the transmission fluid as I put in Redline Shockproof at 8,000, and she'll be good for at least another 8,000. Can't wait for my next service...

Thanks guy's for this most interesting info., Ozrider, you are correct, a lot of us knew many of these marketing tricks and once laughed at peoples gullability, but with the hype and females wearing g-strings saying "oils aint oils" and the like perhaps I've joined the ranks of the unwashed and it's time for me to stop dribbling,........ and get real..... because "oils is oils" and can stuff your investment quicksmart.....I for one am NOW performing my own services as I no longer trust the stealer to have an appropriately qualified mechanic to carry out that work at a charge of $110 per hour.....anyway guys thanks for the info., it helps immesurably.......jacks

Hi darkask69 not going to add to much to this thread but Redline put out a 10w60 Engine oil.A few of the boys in Darwin that have been useing V-twin said the Redline syn is a lot Quieter but a lot more money $125 for4ltr bottle,[as you said HD is a lot cheaper] have not used it myself am still happy with the v-twin and cooler on my 03 Ultra as Harley mineral oil up here can't handle the heat,i drop the v-twin every 10,000ks and still looking good also Redline ATF in the primary Mobil 70w90 syn in the gearbox like driving an automatic smooth all the best from the top looking down on you all.

Put in 1 quart of HD primary fluid, no problems...Infact, the gear changes are now more smooth and less clunky, especially going into first. Very happy with the Mobil 1 and the HD primary fluid. (I still think the Syn 3 is too slippery for the primary).
Anyone who thinks a service is too difficult, ITS NOT!! The satisfaction of doing it all yourself is awesome...

i use Spectro oil's in my wifes 09 sportster & my 09 rocker..i use spectro platinum 20w50 full synthetic motor oil...in the sportster & rocker....i use Spectro primary chaincase oil 85w in the sportster & rocker...& i use Spectro platinum synthetic 75w140 (6 speed specific) gear oil in the rocker's 6 speed transmission...i would have to say the best overall improvement in both the bikes than any other oil i have used...especially this synthetic gear oil.. it is formulated specificaly for the new Harley Davidson 6 speed transmissions & boy you can tell the difference.....

a very interesting read..thank's mate...but like spectro i would have liked to see the comparison to the mobil 1 ...with spectro's premium oil.. platimun synthetic 20w50...the motor oil i have used for some time in my harleys & now in my new rocker 1584 & my 883 sportster.....but like everyone knows you should change your oils & filters regularly and all will be good...but yes i do agree that the oil companys & parts sales people do try to push the motorcycle specific motor oil BS on the unsuspecting public..i choose the spectro premium synthetic oil's for my harleys with 33 years of experience in the automotive mechanical trade and hi performance engine building & i am happy with the spectro product performance & internal parts protection..
