G'day all from Qld,
Well im back into Harleys after 3 decades away and have forgoten anything I may have known back then. I just picked up a 69XLH half baked chop, the guy said it had all been rebuilt before he got it and then it has sat in a shed for 2 years, I put a battery in cranked it over and it started and ran very nicely even on 2 year old fuel. No smoke just a bit rich with a very sweet sounding motor, rode it up the road and back about 1 K then it started smoking heavily on the front cylinder.
Pulled the head and found lots of oil in the intake port, cylinders look perfect and still show hone marks from being rebored, I have not pulled the valves out as yet because with all the money that has been spent on the rebuild I asume they must have done the guides and valves.
Is there something I am missing that would cause sudden oil blow through, the cylinder has about a teaspoon of oil on top of the piston and nearly as much in the port
Any help will be much apreciated
Cheers,
Bourkie
Thanks Dave,
I pulled all the valves and it was only the front intake that had any play the rest are perfect but the one that is gone you can see through the guide beside the stem at least 1/16" oval, it has plenty of oil getting to it so I am not sure what is causing it unless the last guy only replaced 3 valves.
Peter
Pete, I had the guides on my 77 IH done at Northside Cylinder heads at Northgate. ..had the seats for unleaded done while it was there. Get your IH stuff straight from the states . .J&P Cycles or Foghollow. Easy as piss to deal with and have pretty much anything you want, free parts books too
