UPDATE 4.40pm: A PRESTON man has been charged with murder after the shooting death of ex-heavyweight boxing champ Vince Cervi.

The former national champion, dubbed "Voodoo man" in his heyday was allegedly shot dead in Preston after a row.

Cervi, 41, who once held the Australian heavyweight title belt, died from a wound to the abdomen at Preston, after the alleged confrontation.

Paramedics tried to save Cervi's life but he died at the scene.

Homicide squad detectives have charged 45-year-old Preston man David Allan Curran over the killing and he faced the Melbourne Magistrates Court court briefly today.

Mr Curran was charged with one count of murder and was remanded in custody to re-appear on July 14.

Cervi, who was known by the nickname Voodoo Man during his heyday, fought before 38,000 people on the undercard of the Azumah Nelson-Jeff Fenech bout of 1992.

He won the Australian title from James Grima in 1993 but later lost it to ``Aussie'' Joe Bugner.

Police were called to the death scene, in Dalgety St, at about 8pm last night.

Paramedics tried to revive Cervi, but he died at the scene.

Mt Curran is believed to be known to the victim and was taken to Preston police station for questioning before being charged.

Earlier, a wild scene broke out at the scene of the incident about 10pm when a man broke through police lines and ran shouting towards the crime scene.

Police wrestled the man to the ground as more friends and relatives of the victim ran to help the man.

The devastated man fell to his knees with his head between his hands sobbing "Oh my God" over and over again.

A dozen of the victim's visibly shaken friends and relatives remained behind the police line on High St, tears streaming down their faces as they phoned loved ones to tell them about the tragedy.

A woman at the scene, who did not want to be identified, was at a nearby restaurant when the shooting happened.

"I don't live here, I don't want to live here, it's not a dream neighbourhood," she said.

The victim's body was found on the front lawn of the house. A police spokesman said he died from a bullet wound to the abdomen.

Homicide squad detectives continue to investigate the killing.
