im under the impression i have hyd. lifters... i could lift one straight out of the roller/block housing. the other 3 were very tight, what are they supposed to be?loose or tight?

the adujusting part is on the lifter not the push rod... its a 77 shovel.

i have the manual but its got the adjustment on the pushrod.... and says turn 1 3/4 turns from slack

how do i tell..... 1. are they fucked?

                                2. what they are?

3 how do i adjust them?

scotty, so is there a number of turns to turn it or can it be done by hand?

yes they are solids, nothing wrong with solids, quicker to adjust, if your not sure when the lifter is (off the cam for adjustment,) the other rod on the same head will be at its highest point,( full open valve), remove all 4 cover retaining clips & lift the covers up hold them up with wire so you can watch each rod on its stroke..if you have a kicker that makes it even easier,,,remove both spark plugs as well, ..start on the front inlet..turn the motor over till the lifter is off the cam , thats when you will have the most (play)..the front outlet rod will now be at its highest point, if you keep turning the motor over and it starts going down you have gone to far, you want the oposite rod at its highest before you adjust the rod you are on, move on to the rear head...same deal...as scotty sais no appreciable play in rod just sos it turns, sometimes theres a slight bow in the rod, doesnt take much for that to happen, you will notice this when you have adjusted it and rotate it to see it does turn..and is seated correctly...l leave about a cigarette paper thickness of play in the up/down movement to allow for expantion...

i was not sure if they were hyd. or solids...this is all very new to new....
ok, so they are solids...kool, ive got it running, but its popping/farting, would that be coz the valve timing is out abit? the points wouldnt need adjusting if its only had the heads done?correct me if im wrong....

after reading what u put up kickinon, i think i know where i could have gone wrong, when it said opposite in the book i took that as meaning inlet - inlet, so when front inlet was up adlust the rear inlet.....fuck ...back to the shed again....lol

definitly look at timing, after you have adjusted the lifters, (advance / retard ) at the points, usualy after puish rod adjustment they also will need adjustment, as timing has been adjusted!
dont forget to put a match head of grease on the cam lobe, sos the points dont ware prematurly,

if its at idle thats o.k.... if not then 2 things, either your sender and/ or wiring need to be looked at or you have an oiling problem, low presure usualy if the lights on anything above idle...
