Bloody hell Merv, have you tried calling in a priest or witchdoctor for a home visit?

Haha! Appears the old girl doesn't hate me after all Steve. She was just trying to further my education!

Must have missed your post about adjusting the rotor/sensor gap, stuff generally works better when it's within spec.
I was starting to think that you were being haunted by ghosts of electricity, sometimes there and howling, sometimes completely absent.

May still be mate. May still be.
There were no specs with the unit I bought, unfortunately. So, I was so happy yesterday, when after that adjustment it fired right up, ran great, turn off and wait ten minutes, then fired up again first hit. Went to bed happy, and big grin when I went out to it this morning, turned the fuel and ignition on, hit the starter and not a single kick. Did not, and will not, fire even once. 34c today and near 40 in my shed, so another day in front of the telly in the air-conditioning. So disappointed. Think I will buy a single fire coil, as well as a better quality electronic unit. But will kick the tyres again for a few days first.

First, I might check the voltage at the coil while the motor is turning, just in case the starter motor is a bit hungry.

Merv if you haven't already I would google the bejesus out of that spark unit you got, if you are having issues with it you won't be the first and you just might find a link to an obscure forum somewhere that gives you the key bit of wisdom you need, other thought is if it is a copy of a well known unit then find out what specs that has and sneak up on yours with that, I thought you had it, I really did! And I thought mine was a bit of a gremlin lol.

Nah. It was a cheap unit Hilly, that I bought even before I fitted the new points. Bought it while it was there with the thought I might use it one day.Wish I hadn't, cause sometimes it works, other times it doesn't. I think I might bin it and get a name brand replacement. Just the time it takes to get it prolongs the agony a bit. But one day! One day I'll be able to ride this old girl. And by then, she won't be game to break down cos I'll know everything about her.

Turned the key again late yesterday and she fired up again strong, so I now know what the problem is. Won't start it again until I have a muffler fitted so wishing you guys all a great, happy and safe Xmas, thanks for your help, and see you all in the new year.

I'm glad of that Merv  but what did you do between posts that let you identify the problem???
Quick, the suspense is keeping me awake.

Didn't flood it is all Steve. So still needs fiddling with but certain now carby tweaking and replace el cheapo spark unit will have it on the road. Started on exhaust plumbing today, and with the daughter up from Canberra in a week, I'll get plenty of shed time over Xmas while she takes her mother shopping. So won't be long. Thanks heaps for your help mate, and the others who have commented. Ride safe over Xmas.

Hi Hilly, Steve and anyone else who may have been following this thread. Just wanted to let you know I have over the last couple days got back to my Ironhead trike. I have sourced and fitted a singlefire coil and electronic unit, and can't believe the difference in spark intensity. I started it with carby settings from previous and backfired out carby a bit, which I understand is too lean. Pulled the carby yesterday and mixture screw was full rich, with needle raised at highest setting (Mikuni). So this arvo I changed to largest idle jet I have, as well as largest main jet I have, refitted and starts and sounds ok, with no backfire other than when I released full choke too quick. Overflo is dripping so need to reduce float height a tad and might get at that tomorrow. Feeling a little more confident now with good spark. Haven't been in a hurry with it cos another new bike, plus an articulated sidecar on the way has kept me doing other things. But back at it now.

Been wondering how it's going. While I'm happy running points on one of my bikes, you're right about a big fat spark being a wonderful thing to have. Looking forward to hearing it's running down the road putting a big grin on your face.

I've been having a ball on this old Ironhead! Done about 35 miles without going too far from home, saw an indicated 60 mph once, just lopes along at 80kph, and my home made hand change works great. Tomorrow will be a 60 odd mile ride with my club mates, and looking forward to it. Still not running perfect as I have a temporary Mikuni fitted which is rich in all settings, but new needle jet for my carby next week should see it running as good as gold. Thanks for all your help guys. Thinking about writing an essay on what happened from the time I got the bike til now, but it would be quite long and not sure anyone would read it. One thing I recommend is the single spark ignition system. Throws a spark about an inch long. Love this old bike.

Good stuff Merv, I am fond of a nice bright blue spark that would sit a bull on its arse 😁
If you write it it then it will be read ol mate, enjoy, let us know how the rejetting works out and how the longer ride goes 👍

    Wonderful news Merv.
    It was all worthwhile, eh?
Was it going strong enough to outrun the Z1?

Ha! No, just 2 of us. My mate on his Honda (he turns 86yo today) reckons I corner faster on the trike then on 2 wheels. It was a curvy route in places, and I did try to find it's limits in cornering. But some corners I took well above the posted advisory signs felt like I was going to seperate from the trike due to centrifugal force, but the trike didn't look like lifting a wheel. Looking forward to my next ride. There are 3 or 4 of us, all octogenarians, who follow roads we have ridden for years and know well. Less chance of a slow reaction mishap.

Nothing is ever smooth, it seems. New Q6 Emulsion Tube (needle jet) arrived, but about .008" too big to fit the carby body. Not a genuine Mikuni body, so have to accept what happens. Ideal solution would have been to put a reamer thru the carb body so it was compatible for future changes but there is a locating pin at the bottom of the passage and was afraid of breaking the pot metal outer by removing it. So, fill the holes with grease and into the lathe. Slow speed, small bits, it now fits and is soaking in a jar of petrol to get rid of the grease while I have a couple choc bikkies and a cuppa.

Just enjoyed reading 7 pages of posts on your Sportster Hilly, and looking forward to the next. My old girl is starting and sounding like a dream with the good sparks and larger emulsifier tube, and I am a very happy chappie. So closing this thread. Looking forward to following a few of you guys tho, so as to further my education. Thanks for the support, every bit helped. Cheers.
