Hard Wiring GPS?

    Used my battery minder lead/plug.  Can buy the plugs from supercheap or Jaycar,  this way i unplug when no using gps.  If you do wire direct to battery,  add an inline waterproof  blade fuse   and a switch to turn power off when not in use  or will drain battery over s period of time

    Headlight or taillight circuits are generally the most used "switched +12v" circuits. 
    Or if it's a new m8 there's a USB port under the tank.

    It can be an easy process WB. I wasted time once with the spare headlight wire (somewhere near the headstem) and it wasn't a long term fix.
    The Garmin GPS usually comes with a reasonable length cable.
    A ram Mount can give you some flexibility to move and position the GPS
    Buy a fuse jumper from Jaycar (probably about $10)
    Run the whole cable under the tank back to the fuse box, use the fuse jumper on the accessories circuit. If the fuse box cover won't close, drill a small hole in the cover and pass the red wire through. The earth can be attached anywhere.

    Hi I just wire some heated grips. Found a blue wire under the seat and tapped into that with a scotch lock. The positive wire that is   Just put the earth to a bolt nearby. Hope that helps. If you have a light you can poke the spikey end in to the wire and clip the other to earth to see if it’s live when you turn the ignition on.

    Garmin’s instal video doesn’t mention an aux circuit for ignition on/off. They connect straight to terminals and say no additional fuses required. I’m with you. Must have ignition functionality.

    For the same of about $10,  i would just add a waterproof inline fuse. I think i used a 5amp,

    Well done WB.

    Now, at the risk of making myself look like an ass.

    Get one of those fuse jumpers for your installation.
    You find a fuse in the fuse box that is ignition switched. You pull that fuse out and replace it with the jumper (the original fuse goes into the jumper for that circuit) You get a second fuse (2amp if you like) for the pigtail (power out wire) from the jumper.
    Simply attach your red wire to that, black to earth and the job is done. Best of all worlds. If you install other accessories like a USB charger / phone charger, connect it to the same wire and bump up the fuse a bit.

    For information, that inline breaker box may cut the power to the GPS when it detects no charging voltage going to battery.
