I have an 84 FLHX shovel and love riding it but how the hell do you guys get on and off in a dignified way with a tour pack fitted. Do you carry a little step ladder with you or do I need to spend more time in the gym. My bloody legs don't bend that far

Lean forward. Stand on the left side, grab the bars half way out each side and rest your weight forward on your arms, then swing your leg, knee bent behind you over the seat. I ride with a back rest on both of my bikes (courtesy of a broken back/several crushed vertebrae) and can easily get on the bikes this way without having to swing my leg over the backrest.
    Hope this helps, Will

Benno, easy, while the bike on side stand, approach it from the Carb side or Injection if EFI, step on running board or foot peg or what ever, then just step over the bike & sit down.

Haha. Not needed. If youre already keeping the bike upright, you’re halfway there. If the backrest is fitted I step into the foot board like kk suggests. The side stand will support you. Adventure bike riders have Been doing it forever. To get off, gentle step away and drag (carefully) the boot over the seat.

Watch how the yanks do it - from the side you were taught NOT to get on your bike from - RIGHT SIDE.  Stand on the floorboard - the bike will easily hold your weight.  So much easier!

T4 is also a type/model of Moto Guzzi. That's where I assumed the name came from.

I am with you James. Either raybear is a midget, fatfucker or an idiot, i shudder to think how he rides if he needs instruction to just get on it.

I have an 84 FXWG with belt drive(about 17k mile on clock) and really enjoy it. No top box, you can just fall onto it...except from the front.
Wifey's 84 FXEF is chain drive.
That picture of yours outside HD Development?.
