GDay - i have a dent in my 2006 Superglide FXDI tank - so rather than repairing this tank - i was hoping to swap over to a streetbob FXDB tank with the integrated speedo
I understand i will have to buy the tank, console, fuel cap and fuel guage and likely a few other brackets

Any other hassles or gotchas i am likely to come across? Any other suggestions?

in any case i have started this endevour.
I have procured a NOS Street Bob tank - i think from a 2014 model

Plus an 09 Fatbob chrome console, and 2011 fatbob fuel pump and top plate.  plus a 5" speedo from a 2010 FXST

Note that a fatbob tank is larger than a streetbob tank (extra litre)
I'm not sure where that extra space is but hopefully it doesnt affect fitment of the dash.

yeah i hope too - I double checked part numbers where possible but im also banking on HD being cheap/lazy and using the same parts for multiple models.
Im still waiting on the dash console to arrive so i can confirm...

so a month later the parts finally arrived so i can do a partial mockup.
The speedo, and dash surround fit perfect however the fuel pump top plate is not the right one. The parts manual shows 2 variants (75217-04A* and 75246-04A) and of course i have the wrong one. So i should be able to get one new(75246-04A) from Harley as the tank is 2017 and they are the same parts since 2006.

    So I still need
    - idiot lights (hard to find)
    - ignition module (easy to buy from EasyR)
    - fuel cap (i assume easy)
    - rounded fuel pump top plate (75246-04A - hopefully can buy new from Harley)

I plan on ditching the leather trim at the base of the dash surround and filling/smoothing over that seam prior to new paint.

Coupla years back a young mate of mine's "mate" bingled his Dyna , speedo on the bars model. a 2009 thing. Cosmetic wipeout as usual.

At the Indy repair shop ( I was not taking the job on from my home garage , too hard basket !) he had them put Wide Glide/Fatbob tank/speedo etc etc as part of the repair. The repair dragged out to 11 months because of it. Getting all the "correct" parts to eventually blend in. They had to extend wires etc.

I gave him ( them !) a low K's Km/H 2007 FXSTC Softail custom stock OEM speedo from my stockpile of parts for getting grey imports "complied".

Now this was not a Harley specialist shop but a "motorcycle shop" , hence my intervention at the time , speedo plus other parts. They had bought a speedo in new that was too fungen small diameter FFsake so I pulled their fat out the fire there. I also GAVE them some other small parts to get the bike back to him.

It was a prick of a job/conversion as you are finding out now. Looked good once done but the owner had no ride for a year.

luckily the dented tank is still fine to ride with. Im collecting these parts in the background.
ill doing all this myself so no charge for labour, and im OK with extending wires etc. Im also doing all the painting. but the downside is finding parts.  I think ive got all the hard-to-get parts already

75246-04A fuel top plate was $99 from Canberra Harley - the seal was $30 and 12x screws $2 each.
I asked about the idiot lights - $170 new from Harley - glad i have an option to buy new but will wait till next pay.....

Ignition switch $60 and fuel cap $20 from EasyR - in stock.

so apart from some redo of the wires, that should be all the parts i need.

great weather for making a mess in shed. Removed the badges and smoothed out the seam.

YEah, those seams give me the chits!  Its just sloppy cheap manufacturing to not smooth and mold them in.
I bough a larger tank for the Sporty and am going to do exactly the same! and then repaint with some dayglow with flake!

So yeah - while Im painting the tank i might as well paint the lot....

I have some vivid black (DeBeers) and HS clear waiting - just hoping it doesnt get too cold before i get a chance to lay down the paint.

For the tank... I see in the pics its still painted from the factory.  Did you strip to bare metal or paint over the stock black?  Did you do any special prep?

besides the body-filler which was a mission... I just sanded back the denim black paint with 240, 400, 600, 800. Then HS surface primer then sanded again with wet 600 wet 800.
Then some Wax&grease remover, tack rag -  then 3 coats base, tack rag, then 3 coats clear

I did the same thing for all the parts.

Too easy.... I might just bite the bullet and do my spare tank - if only to get in some practice.

Looks like a nice paint job for a "Hom'er" good onya. Chip resistance of the paint on the road will be your telling time.

All very similar to my young mates 2009 Dyna. Gloss black with green ghost flames , came out lovely.

ill wait a week for the clear coat to cure fully and then ill sand out a few defects in the clear coat on the tank with 600/800 then give it another 2 coats of clear. This should give it a bit more depth for the polishing stages

This paint job is 90% - not perfect but im OK with it.

this process was just to provide some small upgrades to a cheap 06 superglide - if it was a better model that cost me more money I would probably be more fastidious.
